Educator Evelyn Wood, 86, whose name became synonymous with speed reading after she opened her first Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics Institute in 1959 in Washington, died of heart failure on Aug. 26 in Tucson. Wood, a onetime high school English teacher who often could whiz through as many as 15,000 words per minute, rose to fame after President Kennedy asked her to teach her technique—reading down a page using the hand as a pacer while visually grouping words—to his Cabinet members. Eventually there were more than 150 Evelyn Wood institutes worldwide.
