Director Frank Perry, 65, whose films included David and Lisa (1962), Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970), Mommie Dearest (1981) and Compromising Positions (1985), died on Aug. 29 of prostate cancer in New York City. After being diagnosed five years ago, Perry spent three years making a documentary, On the Bridge (1993), about his own fight against the disease....
Guitarist Sterling Morrison, 53, a founding member of the influential pre-punk band the Velvet Underground, died on Aug. 30 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. In 1971, Morrison left the group—which he had founded with Lou Reed, John Cale and Maureen Tucker six years before—and went on to earn a Ph.D. in medieval studies at the University of Texas at Austin. In recent years, Morrison performed on a Velvet Underground reunion tour of Europe and as a guest performer with the Hudson Valley (N.Y.) Philharmonic.
Actor Larry Hagman, 63, was released in good condition on Sept. 2 from L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he underwent a liver transplant on Aug. 23. The former Dallas star, who is now resting in an undisclosed location, was diagnosed with liver cancer in July and cirrhosis of the liver two years earlier.
On Sept. 2, two days I before the premiere of her syndicated TV talk show, singer Carnie Wilson, 27, said yes when beau Steven Port, 29, a banker, popped the question. Together for more than two years, the couple have yet to set a date for their wedding, which will be the first for both.
Romance novel queen I Danielle Steel, 48, and her fourth husband, former shipping magnate John Traina, 61, officially separated on Aug. 31 after 14 years of marriage. The couple, still sharing their 55-room San Francisco mansion, have no immediate plans to divorce. Together they have five kids, and each has two other children from previous marriages.
Singer Boy George's younger brother, ex-boxer Gerald O'Dowd, 31, was charged on Sept. 4 with the stabbing death of his wife, Gill, 32, a sales supervisor for a cigarette firm, in Tring, England. "Everything seemed peaceful and happy," Boy George said in a statement. "She was a very forthright, bright, intelligent woman and seemed to be very good for him."
Supergirl star Helen Slater, 31, and husband Rob Watzke, 35, a filmmaker, welcomed Hannah Nika (7 lbs., 10 ozs.), their first child, on Aug. 28 in L.A. Appropriately enough, Slater recently signed to play a new mother in Operating Instructions, a TV series now in development.
