'60S ROCK & SOUL EXPEDITIONS
Rock Expedition: The 1960s and Soul Expedition: The 1960s are more than just collections of golden oldies. Each set (sold individually) lets you listen to 10 classic songs like Sonny & Cher's I Got You Babe and Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay while you read, onscreen, about the musicians and their work. In audio clips, the singers (or, in some instances, people close to them) talk about how the music was created. In one, Sonny Bono explains, "the phrase 'babe' was all over the place then. I wanted to come with a hook using that word in it before it maxed out....
I finally found a song that could suit my voice." Short bios include up-to-date info on the stars. For example, Wilson Pickett (In the Midnight Hour), living up to his '60s moniker the Wicked One, was recently released from a New Jersey jail after his 1993 conviction for drunk driving. His bio also describes an incident 20 years ago in which police were called after the singer fired a shot into a motel room, occupied by members of the Isley Brothers band, who took him to court. (Two-set CD-ROM for Mac & PC, Compton's New-Media, $29.95)
