Picks and Pans Review: The Convict

UPDATED 12/18/1995 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 12/18/1995 at 01:00 AM EST

by James Lee Burke

Burke is best known for his lavishly written Dave Robicheaux series about an ex-New Orleans detective who now tends a bayou bait shop—when not wrestling with Mob kingpins and his own nightmares about Vietnam. This six-pack of pre-Robicheaux works—Two for Texas, Half Paradise, etc.—shows Burke in the process of finding his mature style and is itself a find. (Hyperion, $10.95 each)
