It rains cat and dog books all year round, of course, but these two break from the pack. Canine (Doubleday, $20) offers photos that are standard-issue cute, but the text has gems like Winston Churchill's pondering his daughter's "poor Puggywug" and Byron's epitaph for his beloved Boatswain. Scratching pictures altogether Cat (Farrar Straus Giroux $20) presents a literate array of poems (by Neruda Tolkien and Baudelaire; there's even kitty haiku) that will have cat people looking even more fondly at their little purr balls.
