Page-Turner of the Week

FOR SOMEONE WITH 11 GRAMMYS, Maggie Bradford has abysmal luck. There is, for starters, the singer's abusive first husband, who tries to kill her and their daughter. Next there's her lover, incredibly rich and sensitive—who suffers a fatal heart attack. And now there's Will Shepherd, aka "The Blond Arrow," the soccer legend turned movie star whose heart is as dark as his looks are golden.

Bestseller Patterson (Kiss the Girls) unfolds Maggie's sudsy travails with a lower gore quotient than in his previous thrillers, but also with less ingenuity and less intriguing characters (his popular detective Alex Cross doesn't make an appearance). Still, pulled by a twisty narrative that barrels along as swiftly as Will's Mercedes, you're likely to stay onboard for a hair-raising ride. (Little, Brown, $23.95)
