Scotland Yard's finest, Jane Tennison (Helen Mirren), is tougher and lonelier than ever since her promotion to detective superintendent. Called in on a nasty case in the suburbs (reminiscent of a real Tory MP's scandalous 1994 autoerotic accidental death/suicide), she finds the usual sexism: "My wife's getting it regular, which you're obviously not," snarls one angry copper. Mother-daughter tensions dominate the twist-ridden plot; Tennison even has to work with a professional "daughter" of sorts—a young police detective (Sophie Stanton). You know it won't be easy.
