Realizing a little jab'll do ya, the Orlando Magic's 71" rimrocker Shaquille O'Neal backed MTV's Dan Cortese (right, ducking) into the ropes at the opening of the second Official All Star Cafe, in CancĂșn, Mexico (the first one is in Manhattan). The sports-themed cafes count O'Neal, Monica Seles and Wayne Gretzky among their partners.

On the sidewalks of New York City, Brad Pitt clasped his fashionable bag lady and gal pal, actress Gwyneth Paltrow. He was in Manhattan to film Devil's Own, a thriller about an IRA hit man who moves to the Big Apple.

Harrison Ford seemed in clear and present danger of being consumed by his Medusan headdress (never mind the fringed dainty) as Harvard's Hasty Pudding Club named him its Man of the Year. "I'm beside myself," he declared.

Michelle Pfeiffer may romance Robert Redford onscreen in the new Up Close & Personal, but at the movie's L.A. premiere, she shined love lights only on her hubby, TV producer David E. Kelley {Picket Fences and Chicago Hope).

Caroline in the City's Lea Thompson (right) rose to the occasion as a presenter at the Screen Actors Guild Awards in L.A. Plenty more film and TV stars turned out, including The X-Files' David Duchovny (below right, with date Suzanne Lanza), who lost out for best actor in a TV drama series to ER's Anthony Edwards. (Duchovny did get to celebrate when costar Gillian Anderson nabbed a best actress prize.) Filmmaker Quentin Tarantino (below) escorted his new lady friend, Mighty Aphrodite's Mira Sorvino, who was up for best supporting actress, but lost to Sense and Sensibility's Kate Winslet.

With an eloquent embrace, Ekaterina Gordeeva, 24, hugged daughter Daria, 3, after the pairs champ skated solo at a Stars on Ice show in Hartford, Conn. Last November, the Soviet-born skater lost her husband and ice partner of 14 years, Sergei Grinkov (above, at the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer), when he died of heart failure at age 28. The duo won two Olympic gold medals and four world titles. "I could never skate with anyone else," said Gordeeva.
