Picks and Pans Review: Rasputin
HBO (Sat, March 23, 9 p.m. ET)
With his hooded eyes and seedy allure, Alan Rickman (Sense and Sensibility) is an inspired choice to play the hard-partying holy man who became spiritual adviser to the Russian royal family and, as we would say today, created a credibility problem for Nicholas II. Rickman's Rasputin is ripe to the point of rot, yet droll. Otherwise, this two-hour HBO movie doesn't have anything new to add to the Romanov saga.
