VAL OF THE DOLL

Val Kilmer and Cindy Crawford, who have tried to keep their five-month-old romance quiet, celebrated Crawford's 30th birthday with a small, candlelit party for family and close friends on Feb. 24 (four days after the actual big day) in Malibu....

After maintaining his silence on the subject for many months, Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney Christopher Darden is finally about to admit that he and colleague Marcia Clark (see story on page 84) were romantically involved during the O.J. Simpson trial but have since broken up. Look for Darden to spill the beans to Barbara Walters on ABC's 20/20 next Friday (March 15), when he promotes his new book, In Contempt. Darden takes the high road in the book, saying that, among other things, he slept over at Clark's house several times during the trial—"on the couch." My favorite passages involve the playful notes that the two passed in court. In one, Darden says Clark asked him, "Do you have to make me laugh when the cameras are on us?" As for Darden's post-Clark love life, I hear he went on a date a week ago with Robin Quivers, Howard Stern's sidekick....

Speaking of O.J., he wasn't among the 300-plus guests at the retirement party last month for Det. Philip Vannatter, one of the lead detectives on the Simpson murder investigation. Attendees at the Police Academy in L.A. included the families of murder victims Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Jay Leno appeared gratis, bringing along a 30-minute tape of the best O.J. jokes from his Tonight Show, and he presented Vannatter with a big cake iced with the word G-U-I-L-T-Y....

Two nights before picking up two awards at the Grammys last month, Hootie & the Blowfish treated late-night patrons at the bar of the Four Seasons Hotel in L.A. to an impromptu medley of Barry Manilow songs. (H&B often performs Manilow material a cappella during concerts.) Manilow says he's flattered. "With good taste like that," he says, "they're bound to be superstars forever."...

With mouth agape, I watched Whitney Houston and Barbara Davis, wife of billionaire oilman Marvin Davis, compare outsize diamond rings during the pre-Grammy party thrown by Arista Records president Clive Davis (no relation to Marvin) at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Houston's 12-karat ring, nice as it was, looked like a frozen pea beside Davis's 34-karat boulder....

Michelle Pfeiffer's newscaster character has seven different hairstyles in the new hit Up Close and Personal. During shooting, the crew took an informal poll to determine their favorite do. The winner, says Jon Avnet, the film's director, was the dirty-blond shag Pfeiffer wears in the movie's opening scenes. The crew dubbed it "Michelle's trailer-trash look."...

It has become commonplace at k.d. lang concerts for women in the audience to toss panties onto the stage for the lesbian singer. But during one of lang's recent performances in Los Angeles, women began tossing matchbooks. "What are you trying to do, burn me?" joked lang. A fan shouted out that the matchbooks contained phone numbers. At that, lang picked up a matchbook and launched into her next song.
