Matt LeBlanc, Jayne Brook
This insipid comedy manages to besmirch not only baseball but Ed Sullivan. LeBlanc, looking as if he has never come closer to an infield than to acting lessons, plays a minor-league pitcher assigned to room with a baseball-playing chimpanzee named Ed, unaccountably, after the old Toast of the Town. The chimp is portrayed by puppeteers in strikingly unrealistic, moth-eaten monkey suits.
There's also a romance involving LeBlanc and Brook, as a waitress with a sweet little daughter, that detours the plot: Even Ed all but disappears as LeBlanc's team plays for a league championship. (PG)
