Picks and Pans Review: Trail of Secrets

Nothing that happens seems remotely possible in this Victorian novel set in modern-day New York City, but that doesn't detract from its entertainment value. The story kicks off with a baby being stolen from a tenement flat, moves on to a beautiful blonde growing up in Connecticut horse country and lurches improbably to a downtown Manhattan courtroom where another baby is being fought over—a baby whose true identity is known only to one guilt-ridden adoptive mother.

But however unlikely the plot twists, you do not wander off this Trail. Author Goudge keeps you cheering for the book's three women protagonists, who are on a collision course with fate and each other. (Viking, $23.95)
