Actor Herbert Anderson, 77, better known as owlish father Henry Mitchell on the CBS sitcom Dennis the Menace (1959-1963), died in his sleep at his Palm Springs, Calif., home on June 11. Anderson, who began his career in 1939, also appeared in Broadway shows such as The Caine Mutiny Court Martial (1953) and films including The Male Animal (1942)....

Lubavitcher leader Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, 92, head of one of the world's largest Hasidic Jewish communities, died on June 12 from stroke-related complications at a New York City hospital. In his will, Schneerson, who had an estimated 250,000 followers worldwide, left no designated successor....

Angela Lakeberg, 11 months, the Siamese twin who was surgically separated from her sister Amy last August, died on June 9 from cardio-respiratory complications at a Philadelphia hospital. Amy died during the operation.

Ryne Sandberg, 34, the Chicago Cubs all-star second baseman and, in 1990, one of PEOPLE'S 50 Most Beautiful People, announced his retirement on June 13. Citing his poor performance this year—he was batting .238, 51 points below his lifetime average—Sandberg said, "I am not the type of person who can be satisfied with anything less than my very best effort and my very top performance." He added that the four-year $25 million contract he signed in 1993 wasn't reason enough to keep playing. By retiring, he will sacrifice $15.7 million in salary.

Socialite Marline Ramallo, 39, was arrested and charged with drunk driving and possession of marijuana after she hit a parked motorcycle belonging to an off-duty policeman on June 11. The fourth wife of Washington Redskins owner Jack Kent Cooke, 81, Ramallo was released without bail pending a June 22 hearing. On May 25, an earlier drunk driving charge against her was dismissed because of lack of evidence.

Tennis star Jennifer Capriati, 18, checked out of a Miami Beach substance-abuse clinic on June 10 after a 23-day slay following her arrest last month on a charge of marijuana possession. She has been accepted into a yearlong drug counseling program in Miami, and if she completes it, her record will be expunged.
