Diamond Rio

Considering how few country groups there are, it may seem unfair to give this amiable quintet too hard a time. If only they didn't sound so eager to please (not for nothing was their 1991 hit debut tided Meet in the Middle). While they have the skills to handle anything they'd like to try, their choice remains to play it safe. Ballads like "Finish What We Started" and the title tune are pleasant but lack distinction. Only "Kentucky Mine," a bittersweet coal workers' song, goes off the beaten path—and boy, does it sound out of place. (Arista)
