Crystal Waters

Crystal Waters's 1991 "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" was the dance single that went Top 10 thanks to its catchy "la da dee/la da da" chorus and just-this-side-of-off-key vocals. In the club-music world, dominated as it is by big-mama belters, Waters was a postmodern minimalist, her weirdness a breath of fresh air. This sophomore effort is sassy, solid and a lot less weird; she sings on-key, has smoothed any rough edges and seems to be aiming for pop acceptance rather than dance transcendence. Storyteller has enough potent grooves to satisfy beat addicts. Too bad Waters's unique personality had to be checked at the door. (Mercury)
