Earl Strom, 66, a flamboyant, fearless referee who worked in the National Basketball Association for 33 years before his retirement in 1990, died of a cancerous brain tumor on July 10 at his Pottstown, Pa., home. Said Red Auerbach, president of the Boston Celtics: "He was the best there ever was."
On July 13 a Portland, Ore., judge sentenced Jeff Gillooly, 26, ex-husband of skater Tonya Harding, 23, to two years in prison and ordered him to pay a $100,000 fine for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on Olympic skater Nancy Kerrigan, 24, at the U.S. Figure Skating Championship finals in Detroit. Gillooly, who was one of four coconspirators to make a deal with prosecutors, had pleaded guilty to a charge of racketeering....
On July 6 a judge ordered Robert Sceeles, 25, to keep at least 100 yards away from grunge-rocker Courtney Love, 30, widow of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, and her daughter Frances Bean, 22 months. Sceeles appeared at her Seattle home on June 22 and insisted on seeing her. Charged with criminal trespassing, he is scheduled for an Aug. 8 court hearing.
General Hospital star Genie Francis, 32, who first played Laura on the ABC daytime series when she was 14, and her husband, actor Jonathan Frakes, 41, who played Commander Riker on the syndicated series Star Trek: The Next Generation., expect to become first-time parents next month....

Whitney Houston, 30, suffered a miscarriage on July 8 while on tour in Houston. She and her husband, singer Bobby Brown, 25, had announced the pregnancy during her June 28 concert in Atlanta. The couple, who have a daughter, Bobbi Kristina, 16 months, said they will try again to have a second child.
Citing "irreconcilable differences," actress Diane Lane, 29, filed for divorce from actor Christopher Lambert, 36, on July 7 in L.A. The couple, who married in 1988, have Eleanor, 10 months.
