Picks and Pans Review: House of Love

Amy Grant

If you've heard any of this erstwhile gospel singer's previous releases, you know what to expect from House of Love—more words of joy over smiley-face melodies. Just consider a sample of lyrics from the first three songs: "You're the kind who will never ever leave"; "Do you wanna be in love forever?"; "I'm gonna give all of my love 'til the end of time." Thankfully, slightly better things lie ahead (the percussive "The Power" and the title song, a soulful duet with country star Vince Gill). But in the end, Grant can't let go of her treacly worldview. Perhaps she should keep in mind that optimism and depth aren't mutually exclusive. (A&M)
