SCREENWRITER LEONARD Schecter doesn't have great expectations for his new assignment, a miniseries titled Inside Di-The Real Story. But it gets him a trip to London, a $500 per diem and a tall, blonde (albeit bulimic) lover.
The romance begins when Schecter enters a receiving line for the Princess of Wales and asks her to dance. Soon, he's caught in the royal whirl-taking tea with Di, betting on the Queen's horse, birding at Balmoral. The tale grows wilder when Leonard and Di, on holiday in Nassau, negotiate their escape from a McDonald's with the little princes in tow.
Wacky, whimsical and wonderfully diverting, Di and I also offers consolation for those waiting for the real Di to start dating. (Random House, $20)
