There are few things TV does as well as it glorifies pro football. But this overview of the game from NFL Films is a little ponderous, too concerned with establishing the game's impact on our society. It does however trot out the legends: Jim Thorpe, Red Grange, Sammy Baugh, Chuck Bednarik, Jim Brown, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Joe Montana and others. Of course every fan will have numerous gripes about what has been omitted. Personally I don't see how you can do a history of the game without showing a single clip of Paul Warfield, the most graceful receiver ever to step on a field.

Next week PBS rolls out filmmaker Ken Burns' mammoth, eagerly awaited sports history. But for this week, 75 Seasons is paradise enough. Baseball can wait.
