Dinosaur Jr's lead singer J Mascis is the Neil Young of alternative rock, and not just because his warbly singing voice resembles Young's. Like his classic rock forefather, Mascis can be depended on to trot out an impressive album every few years. Without a Sound is brimming with molten-hot guitar solos, slacker-in-love lyrics and an increasing country-rock influence. Few can top Mascis at moody, fuzzbox balladry. "Hey, look over your shoulder/Hey, it's me gettin' older," he sings on the mournful "Over Your Shoulder." He needn't worry; Dinosaur Jr keeps getting better with age. (Sire/Reprise)
