She's so confident in her own skin," says the Streisand-struck Kathie Lee Gifford, "that it really doesn't matter what's on it." Maybe not—but what's on it these days helps. Streisand, 52, who got laughs in a see-through Scaasi at the '68 Oscars, now eschews the gratuitously outrageous. Onstage or off, in diva gowns or trousers, she favors streamlined elegance—with a whisper of whimsy. "Barbra," says pal Donna Karan, who designs many of her clothes, "is diamonds and sneakers, pinstripes and lace, comfort and elegance." Will her class act last? Stay tuned. Says Karan: "Barbra is a modern woman who sets trends. She never follows them."
