Is the 38-year-old Oscar winner, who once claimed to have "no taste whatsoever," a Forrest Gump of fashion? Actually, it is not mere providence that leads Hanks to unerring pizzazz, to the subtle splash of a mismatched vest, the grace of well-cut cloth. His eye for detail has been trained on movie sets where, he has said, "I've always had really good relationships with wardrobe people." There, admittedly, he's not above pleading, "Please help me, what kind of pants do you think I should wear?" What makes Tom terrific, concludes director Nora (Sleepless in Seattle) Ephron, is a mix of extravagance and humility. "He has," she says, "a tiny bit of vanity, but a huge wardrobe."
