Many women worship the scruffy Hawke, 23. If they're smart, they'll do it from afar. Intent on changing his image from movie to movie, he seems remarkably unconcerned about changing his clothes. He has been known to wear the same too-tight dark blue shirt for three days running, and at a Reality Bites screening in Manhattan in February, both he and his peacoat looked flea-bitten. "Ethan is obviously into the grunge look," says designer Nolan Miller. "But I don't see how anyone can take himself seriously looking like that. Clean hair goes a long way."
