In this corner: the perfect drape of Italian wool in exquisitely subdued earth tones. And in that corner: the snap and sizzle of metal and leather in operatic Technicolor. However you look at it, Giorgio Armani, 60, and Gianni Versace, 47—who insist they're colleagues, not rivals—have the celebrity market cornered. Jodie, Whoopi and Jack side with Armani, who says, "I've never had to hunt stars." Sly, Di and Cindy believe in Versace, who claims, "I court all the people in the world." But nowhere was the difference between the couturiers' styles more delightfully apparent than on keyboard kings Billy Joel (Armani) and Elton John (Versace), who this summer completed a 14-city tour in their dueling duds.
