Ivana Trump, 45, announced on Sept. 28 that she is engaged to marry her companion of three years, Italian entrepreneur Riccardo Mazzucchelli, 51, next March. This will be the second marriage for Trump, who has Donald Jr., 16, Ivanka, 12, and Eric, 9, from her 13-year marriage to Donald Trump. Mazzucchelli has a son, Dehli, 26, from his first marriage.

Brian Bown, 41, the Snellville, Ga., social studies teacher who on Aug. 22 refused to open the school day in his class with a state-mandated moment of silence, was fired Sept. 22 by the Gwinnett County school board. Bown, who had been suspended without pay since the incident, called the moment of silence an unconstitutional attempt to return prayer to the public schools.

On Sept. 22, the California court of appeals overturned a lower-court decision requiring Kim Basinger, 40, to pay Main Line Studios $8.1 million because she backed out of an agreement to star in the 1993 movie Boxing Helena. The appeals court found that the judge in the March 1993 trial did not help the jury to differentiate between the liability of Basinger and that of her production company. The case will now return to state trial court for possible retrial....

Two Brazilians filed a $20 million negligence lawsuit in a Manhattan federal court against Michael Jackson, 36, on Sept. 27, claiming they were victims of a hit-and run accident involving Jackson's van in São Paulo, Brazil, last October. Marcio Alberto de Paolo, 16, and his sister Renata, 14, say they were hit by the van, driven by one of Jackson's entourage, which then sped through a crowd. Marcio Alberto, who suffered a fractured femur, requires further surgery....

TV scriptwriter Sandy Veith, fortysomething, was awarded $7.3 million in damages from MCA and Universal City Studios in Los Angeles superior court on Sept. 26. The jury found that his 1981 script Coletta, about a doctor who moves to a small town to pay off his medical-school loans, was the basis for the studios' hit CBS series Northern Exposure. Vieth wrote the script while under contract to Universal....

On Sept. 27, Jon Voight, 55, retracted allegations that he was sexually harassed by former business associate Laura Pels, 60ish. Voight had filed a breach-of-contract suit against her on Aug. 15, claiming that she backed out of a multimillion-dollar film venture because he wouldn't respond to her advances. Pels sued Voight for libel. Both have agreed to drop their lawsuits....

For the second time in three months, John Wayne Bobbitt, 27, was convicted in municipal court in Las Vegas of beating ex-fiancée Kristina Elliott, 21. On Sept. 27, he was sentenced to 30 days in jail but was released pending his appeal. Last month he served 12 days of a 15-day sentence for battering Elliott, a former exotic dancer.

Geraldo Rivera, 51, and his wife, C.C. Dyer, 37, welcomed Simone Cruickshank (8 lbs. 7 ozs.), on Sept. 24 in New York City. Their other child is Isabella, almost 2. Rivera also has Gabriel Miguel, 15, from his third marriage....

Yasmin Le Bon, 30, and husband Simon, 35, are parents of a third daughter, whose name was not revealed, born Sept. 10 in Richmond, England. Her sisters are Amber, 5, and Saffron, 2.
