ABC NEWS HAS COME UP WITH A FASCINATING premise for its special The Blame Game: Are We a Country of Victims? (Wed., Oct. 26, 10 p.m. ET). Reporter John Stossel spends an hour exploring a "victim mentality"—the current tendency for everyone to fault others for any misfortune. With interviews of such people as a New Mexico woman who sued McDonald's when she spilled some of their hot coffee on herself and San Francisco drug addicts who qualify for disability benefits, Stossel creates a scary portrait of a society that seems to be losing its self-reliance. (Robert Hughes made the same charges in his 1993 book The Culture of Complaint.) Stossel is a strong anchor for this kind of thing, even if he also wins the Mike Wallace Award for his overly aggressive, self-important interview style.
