by Marisa Acocella

SHE (her real name) is everybabe, a wisecracking but wise cartoon heroine for the '90s. This volume chronicles her life from conception (before panty nose; through growing up in the '70s (the decade of disco) and right up to the present ("Why is it when I was twentysomething, thirtysomething was in, now I'm thirtysomething and twentysomething's in?!").

SHE is the creation of Marisa Acocella, a former advertising executive. The book is based on Acocella's hip and witty comic strip that has been appearing in Mirabella since 1993. SHE's tribulations will be achingly familiar to many women who have come of age since the '60s. Plagued by troubled relationships with a revolving cast of "boys du jour" and a "(s)mother" who loves too much, SHE must also cope with changing gender roles. "I was always afraid I'd turn into my (s)mother. But it was worse (way, way worse): Damn, I'm turning into my father."

This smart, funny book will appeal to anyone who, like SHE, believes that life is being compromised by partisan politics, violent crime, a deteriorating environment and the sad fact that Al Gore isn't single. (Harmony, $20)
