Today show weather-man Al Roker, 40, is forecasting constantly sunny skies now that Dateline NBC correspondent Deborah Roberts, 34, has accepted his marriage proposal. The wide man of weather popped the question on New Year's Day during the couple's trip to the Grand Canyon. A September wedding is planned. It will be Roker's third marriage (he has a daughter, Courtney, 7), and Roberts's first.
Industrial designer Brooks Stevens, 83, who overhauled the Harley-Davidson motorcycle's look in 1949 and put the sizzle in Oscar Mayer's promotional "Wienermobile" in 1958, died of heart failure Jan. 4 in Milwaukee. As a consultant to more than 585 companies during his 45-year career, Stevens designed everything from cars to cigarette lighters to the first wide-mouthed peanut butter jar. He also coined the phrase "planned obsolescence," using it first in a speech in 1949....
British writer Kathleen Tynan, 57, best known for The Life of Kenneth Tynan, her compelling 1987 biography of her husband, the influential drama critic to whom she was married for 13 years until his death in 1980, died of cancer Jan. 10 in London. Born Kathleen Halton, she began her career as a journalist with the Observer. She wrote several novels and the screenplay for Agatha, a speculation on the unexplained 1926 disappearance of mystery writer Agatha Christie, which became a 1979 movie starring Vanessa Redgrave.
Ex-James Bond star Roger Moore, 67, and his third wife, Luisa, 56, have parted ways after 27 years of marriage and three children. Moore, who played 007 in seven films, has been keeping company with Danish socialite Christina "Kiki" Tholstrup, 53, a former pal of Luisa's.
After former Vice President Dan Quayle, 47, underwent an appendectomy on Jan. 4 at Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis, doctors announced that a cyst found on his appendix was benign. Quayle, who was treated in the same hospital in December for blood clots in a lung, went home Jan. 9. Doctors say he can resume normal activity this week.
Raucous Martin Lawrence, 29, comic star of Fox's Martin, wed Patricia Southall, 24, a former Virginia who was first runner-up in 1994's Miss USA pageant, on Jan. 7 in Norfolk, Va. Among the 600 guests at the ceremony were Eddie Murphy, I Will Smith and Martin costar Tisha Campbell. "Martin was just beaming," says Mona Campbell, Tisha's mother, who was also a guest. The couple met 2½ years ago when Lawrence was appearing in a Def Comedy Jam show in Richmond.
Aspiring artist Jade Jagger, 23, daughter of Rolling Stones lead singer Mick and his first wife, Bianca, is going to make that once-tempestuous twosome grandparents for the second time. She and her companion, fellow painter Piers Jackson, 25, are expecting a child this spring. The couple, who met while studying at Cambridge and live now in pastoral Dorset, are already the parents of daughter Assisi, 2.
Wheel of Fortune's easygoing host, Pat Sajak, 48, and his wife, Lesly, 29, a former model turned photographer, welcomed a new addition to their family with the Jan. 5 birth of Maggie Marie (7 lb. 14 oz.) in Annapolis, Md. The Sajaks also have a son, Patrick, 4.
