Comic actor Chevy Chase, 51, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving by Beverly Hills police at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 26. Police say tests revealed a .18 blood alcohol level, more than twice the legal limit. The actor spent the night in jail and was released the next day. His arraignment is set for March 2.

Philip Burton, 90, a Welsh stage director and drama teacher who was both father figure and mentor to actor Richard Burton, died of a stroke on Jan. 28 at a nursing home in Davenport, Fla. While teaching English at a school in Wales in the 1940s, Philip Burton was impressed by the talents of one of his pupils, Richard Jenkins. In 1943, Burton made the 18-year-old his legal ward (and, after Burton suggested that being a schoolmaster's son would improve Jenkins' chances of being accepted into Oxford University, Jenkins took the Burton name). "Everything I've learned about the theater I've learned from Philip," the actor once said....

Record producer David Cole, 32, who was half of the creative team behind the neodisco group C&C Music Factory, died of complications of spinal meningitis on Jan. 24 at a hospital in Manhattan. Cole scored a monster hit with the dance anthem "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" in 1991, and, with his C&C partner, Robert Clivillés, won a Grammy Award for 1993's album of the year, The Bodyguard soundtrack....

Actress Patricia Welsh, 80, who provided the distinctive, gravelly voice of the title character in E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), died of pneumonia on Jan. 26 in Green Valley, Ariz....

Wall Street whiz Jeffrey P. Beck, 48, a mergers-and-acquisitions specialist who was nicknamed Mad Dog because he would howl after completing a particularly profitable megadeal, died of a heart attack in a Manhattan hospital on Jan. 28. Beck served as an adviser on the film Wall Street (1987); he also had a cameo role.

Onetime Olympic figure skater Tai Babilonia, 35, and her husband of three years, TV sitcom music engineer-producer Cary Butler, 29, welcomed their first child, son Scout Gabriel (7 lbs. 15 ozs.), on Jan. 25 in Los Angeles....

Wheel of Fortune's Vanna White, 37, miscarried late last month in the first trimester of her pregnancy while in Las Vegas. White and her husband, restaurateur George Santopietro, 48, have a son, Nicholas, 8 months.

Professional golfer John Daly, 28, known for his prodigious drives and intemperate behavior—he was once suspended from the PGA tour and entered a rehab center for an alcohol problem in 1993—married former model Paulette Dean, 23, on Jan. 28 at the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. The couple are expecting a baby in June. Daly has a daughter, Shynah, 2, from his second marriage. This latest union is his third, Dean's first....

Former Nixon aide and convicted Watergate conspirator John Ehrlichman, 69, wed Atlanta restaurateur Karen Hilliard (age unavailable) on Jan. 14 in Glen Ellen, Calif. It was wedding No. 3 for both. He has six children from previous marriages; she has two.
