KATO DOES KATO

Brian "Kato" Kaelin, houseguest, friend and possible alibi witness for O.J. Simpson, is planning to star in a movie that will no doubt leave the rest of us wondering where today's front-page headlines end and art begins.

Kaelin will play a chauffeur for a rolling-in-money Beverly Hills couple in The 16th Minute, a low-budget film being made by a Los Angeles-based independent film company called FM Entertainment International.

When the husband is killed in the movie, the wife is charged with the murder, and Kaelin's character turns out to be the only person who can vouch for her whereabouts at the time of the slaying. Just a coincidence? We don't think so.

FM Entertainment tells us it hopes to begin filming later this year.

A SCHMOOZE IS JUST A SCHMOOZE

We hear that the fellow formerly known as Prince was cozying up to actress Morgan Fairchild at a performance by Johnny Rivers at the House of Blues club in L.A. recently.

For the record, Fairchild says she was there that night but denies any interaction with the diminutive singer. However, two eyewitnesses tell a different story. "He had his arm around her and was stroking her back and whispering in her ear," says one source. The second says Prince was "definitely" kissing Fairchild's neck. A House of Blues employee was a little more conservative: "If they weren't smooching," this source says, "then it was certainly heavy schmoozing."

BATH TOYS
If the movie bombs, can its toy line be far behind? The folks at the Cincinnati-based Kenner toy company are keeping their fingers crossed that Kevin Costner's summer flick, Waterworld, won't end up all wet at the box office. It's due to open July 30, despite production woes that have raised its price tag, by some estimates, to as high as $175 million. Kenner is bringing out 10 Waterworld toys timed to the movie's release.

CAMEO CATCH
Early on in Man of the House, the new Chevy Chase comedy, divorced mom Farrah Fawcett and her son watch as one of her dates haplessly tries to get a kite airborne. Shaking his head, the son says of Mom's beaux, "They were all jerks." The uncredited kite flyer? Ryan O'Neal, Fawcett's real-life roommate.
