AS EXPEDITION LEADER DEVON ADAIR, ACTRESS Debrah Farentino doesn't find much to grin about on the futuristic frontier of NBC's Earth 2. She's too busy surviving in the year 2195. But her character's stone face suits Farentino just fine. "I've had smile lines since I was a teenager," she says wearily. "I hate them!"
Apparently she's alone in her opinion. A television critic once called hers "the finest smile lines in prime time." Her E2 costar Clancy Brown, who plays ace mechanic John Danziger, wouldn't argue. "The thing with Debrah," he explains, "is that she gets more and more beautiful as she gets older." Farentino, 35, concedes: "My face has matured nicely. I'm sure some people would think I looked better when I was 19, but I was still a kid. Now I'm a woman."
And one more willing to face the world without armor. "I used to wear a lot of makeup," she says. "I look at an old passport, and I go, 'Who was that?'" These days the wife of producer-director Gregory Hoblit, 50, and the mother of Molly, 3, wears no makeup offscreen; she doesn't even own any. But then, Farentino is expecting her second child in July. She has that natural glow.
