YOU ARE NOT WHAT YOU eat—at least Jimmy Smits isn't. "I'm really all right with the nonfat milk and fruit," he says. "So, it's a little bland."
Bland? Smits? This is NYPD Blue's Det. Bobby Simone, who makes fans forget that David Caruso ever walked the same homicide beat. And if the onscreen competition isn't so demanding—terminally rumpled Dennis Franz plays his partner—remember that Smits also cornered the testosterone market on L.A. Law. "He's just really sexy," says Steven Bochco, producer of both shows. "You hear that from an awful lot of women." Smits is taken, however; the divorced father of two has been living with actress Wanda De Jesus since 1985. For his part, he attributes his magnetism to nurture as much as nature. "I don't see it in the morning when I look in the mirror," he says. "It's amazing what a little hair and makeup on the set can do."
