GILBERT AND BOXLEITNER ARE DOING SOME FAMILY PLANNING

Melissa Gilbert and her husband of four months, Bruce Boxleitner, are expecting their first child in December. "They wanted a baby, but they weren't planning on having it right now," says a friend. "However, they're both thrilled." Gilbert has a son, Dakota, 6, and Boxleitner has two sons, Sam, 14, and Lee, 9, from previous marriages. No word yet on whether the pregnancy will be written into Gilbert's current TV series, Sweet Justice, which NBC has yet to renew for next season....

David Letterman apparently wasn't kidding when he told Drew Barrymore, following her impromptu breast baring on his April 12 Late Show, "I can't thank you enough for that." (Hey, it was Dave's birthday) Barrymore has been booked for a return visit May 22, when she is expected to talk up her next movie, Mad Love, which opens May 26....

Everybody's a writer these days, or at least everybody with even the slightest connection to the O.J. Simpson trial. Barbara Berry, the ex-wife of Simpson lawyer Johnnie Cochran, who claimed in papers filed before her 1977 divorce that Cochran beat her in the '60s, is now shopping a book proposal for her memoirs....

Though the biggest X-Files mystery of all—how long it will take agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) to overcome their restrained professionalism toward each other—remains unsolved, series creator Chris Carter did offer a cryptic clue about the season's cliff-hanger ending, airing May 19. "We killed the Deep Throat character last year. This season, I can promise that somebody else definitely goes down," he says, adding, "There is a chain of events in the preceding shows that will cause Mulder to doubt his ability to do his job and cause Scully to doubt him as well."....

ER's hot doc George Clooney is spending the early part of his summer break (ER 's season finale airs May 18) on a five-city promotional tour—personal appearances and photo ops—for Planet Hollywood. As part of the deal, the restaurant chain is footing the bill for Clooney, a self-described golf nut, to bring along five of his closest buddies for their traditional rite of spring: a road trip to some of the country's best golf courses. Instead of the usual Winnebago, though, this year the boys will be airborne on a private plane. After so much golf and so many hamburgers, how will Clooney's vacation trip to Europe with ER castmate and pal Noah Wyle (slated for late June) begin to compare?....

While Entertainment Tonight correspondent Bob Goen (he's also television host of the Miss Universe Pageant on May 12) was watching an L.A. Kings hockey home game last month, hot-fingered thieves broke into his Mazda RX-7 and made off with everything, including his very celeb-heavy electronic organizer. Several days later police contacted Goen and reported that they had found his belongings in a local crack house. Almost everything, that is, except the organizer. "I had at least two years of E. T. contacts on it," says Goen. "You always say about your organizer, 'God, if I lose that, I'm dead.' Well, I'm dead."

Mitchell Fink is on vacation.
