According to most of our correspondents. America does not love katie Couric (PEOPLE, Aug. 9). Some hold a grudge against her for her bruising 1992 interview with George Bush, while others found fault in her comments about motherhood. On the other hand. Keiko, the whale featured in the film Free Willy, definitely captured readers' hearts.

KATIE COURIC
Katie Couric is a welcome and refreshing face at 7 a.m., and not a morning goes by without Katie put-ling a smile on my face. The Today show has a great team in Couric and Bryant Gumbel, and this fan will continue to watch.
HEIDI BRISSON, Richmond Hill, Ga.

Katie Couric is what is wrong with the American media today. Her interviews with former President George Bush and First Lady Hillary Clinton were rude and insulting. What has happened to respect and decency? You can be hard-biting without rancor.
JOAN A. D'ALESSANDRO, Pembroke, Mass.

In 1978, Katie and I were deciding what to do with our lives while drinking beer and sneaking cigarettes on the steps of the Kappa Sig house in Charlottesville. Suddenly she announced, "I'm going to be the next Jane Pauley." Congratulations, my friend: You did it.
HOLLY KIRKM AN, Fort Lauderdale

"Unglamorous" is the last word that should be used to describe Katie Couric. I'm 15 and have had a crush on her for the past two years. I consider her to be one of the most beautiful women in the world.
MICHAEL C. MCDONOUGH, Andover, Mass.

I agree with Katie Couric that her daughter, Ellie, will probably not be "psychologically scarred" if she is not home to give her ginger ale. But what about being there for bedtime, naptime, bathtime, mealtime and playtime? There is more to motherhood than handing out soft drinks.
PATRICIA L. TAVIS, Union, N.J.

KEIKO THE WHALE
Thank you for your sympathetic approach to the tragic story of Keiko, the whale used in the filming of Free Willy. It is sadly ironic that the liberated movie whale remains a pathetic captive in real life. The movie freed Willy. Now it's time to free Keiko.
DONNA WORTHINGTON, Mesa, Ariz.

I am confused. Richard Donner and Lauren Schuler-Donner did not object to Keiko's captivity while he was making money for their film?
LYNN AYERS GILLESPIE, Arden, N.C.

Keiko needs a new home and we want to help. Where do we send the money?
COURTNEY CARMICHAEL and BECKY BELLROSE, Arvada, Colo.

A Free Keiko fund is in the process of being set up. For information, write Keiko, Donner/Shuler-Donner Productions, Warner Bros. Building 102, Burbank, Calif. 91522.—ED.

CELEBRITY NEIGHBORS
Being inconsiderate of others seems to be the theme song of today. Some celebrities certainly are no exception. Take away their money, send them out into the street with a tin cup and see how long their arrogance lasts.
ABBY M. WESTENBERG, Arcadia, Calif.

While some of Madonna's neighbors feel free to exercise their freedom of speech, they also seem to think that they have the right to deny her freedom of expression. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Keep in mind that artistic innovators such as the impressionists and the cubists were initially ridiculed too.
MARIA PILAR GARCIA, San Francisco

DALE RIFFLE
I am a 20-month-old potbellied pig who coexists happily with six Basset hounds, two cats, four doves, a rabbit, a guinea pig and a parrot. I eat and play and sleep with the dogs, and I know I eat less and smell better than they do! I appreciate Mr. Riffle's efforts to rescue unwanted piggies, but I hope that your readers won't conclude that all potbellied pigs turn out to be pignacious.
CORKY (with CHARLOTTE YOUNGER), Plainfield, N.H.

INSIDER
The caption over the picture of Wynonna and Jay Leno was absolutely insensitive, uncalled-for and downright cruel. I never imagined that PEOPLE would print a statement that indicates someone needs to lose weight. It's harmful statements like that which lead to eating disorders and sometimes death. I hope in a future issue your cover story won't be "Wynonna: Starving for Thinness."
