Singer Helen O'Connell, 73, who wowed WWII GIs with such hits as "Green Eyes" and "Tangerine" and performed with the big bands of Jimmy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman and Glenn Miller, died of cancer Sept. 9 at a San Diego hospice. She gave her last musical performance Aug. 14 in Valley Forge, Pa....

Surfing legend Lorrin "Whitey" Harrison, 80, died of a heart attack Sept. 8 while vacationing in Hawaii. A native Californian who began riding the waves at 14 and never slopped, he was recently featured surfing in a TV ad for Armor All, a car-care product....

Renowned orchestra conductor Erich Leinsdorf, 81, whose career included stints as director of the New York City Opera and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, died of cancer at a Zurich hospital Sept. 11. Leinsdorf made his debut in 1938 with New York City's Metropolitan Opera.

Tony Award winner Tonya Pinkins, 31, who appears in the daytime serial All My Children, lost custody of her two young sons to estranged husband Ron Brawer, 50, musical director for daytime's Another World. The couple, who married in 1987, are also in the middle of divorce proceedings. On Sept. 13 a New York judge ruled that Brawer had the "greater ability to be consistently available to the children."...

Herman Duttton. 15, and brother Druie, 12 of Rush Springs, Okla., pleaded no contest on Sept. 14 to manslaughter. The boys admitted shooting their abusive father, Lonnie, 39, on July 12 after their sister Alicia, 10, claimed she had been sexually molested by him. If the Duttons, who are currently in foster care, break no laws in the next 31 months, they will have no criminal records.

Three-time Wimbledon champ Boris Becker, 25, and his fiancée, model-actress Barbara Feltus, 26, are expecting their first child in January. The couple plan to wed before the end of the year.

Award-winning novelist Martin Amis, 44, whose books include Time's Arrow (1991) and London Fields (1989), has, according to British papers, separated from his wife of nine years, Antonia Phillips, 41, a writer.

Merle Haggard, 56, country music's "Okie from Muskogee," and his companion of seven years, Theresa Ann Lane, 33, wed Sept. 11 at his ranch near Redding, Calif. It's the fifth time for Haggard and the second for Lane. Haggard has four children from his first marriage. He and Lane have a daughter, Janessa, 3, and a son, Ben, 9 months....

Oscar winner Loretta Young, 80, star of the 1947 classic The Farmer's Daughter and later of her own TV series (1953-1961), married Hollywood costume designer Jean Louis, 85, on Sept. 10 in Beverly Hills.

Heart and Souls star Robert Downey Jr., 28, and his wife, actress Deborah Falconer, 28, welcomed their first child, a son, reportedly named Indio (8 lbs., 6 oz.), on Sept. 7 in Los Angeles.

Former first daughter Amy Carter, 25, plans to wed longtime love Michael Antonucci, 27, next August. Carter once attended Brown University but graduated from the Memphis College of Art in 1991.
