CBS (Oct. 31, 9 p.m. ET)

In this solid domestic melodrama, based on a true story, a supercharged Patty Duke stars as a suburban matron whose obsession with, as she says with mantrie intensity, "keeping our family together" drives off most of her relatives.

When daughter Tracy Nelson is overwhelmed by the birth of twins—one, Jesse, with Down syndrome, the other, Jordan, with other health complications—she and her husband place Jesse with a couple (Susan Blakely and Marshall league) who are already raising 11 other Down syndrome children. Duke, wanting to bring Jesse up herself, tries to block the adoption in the courts. Mama's coup de grâce: She hauls the whole family onto an afternoon talk show.
