Former New York Mets outfielder Vinee Coleman, 32, and Detroit Tigers outfielder Eric Davis, 31, were named as defendants in a lawsuit filed by the parents of Amanda Santos, 2, in Los Angeles Superior Court on Oct. 18. The Santoses, who charged the players with battery and negligence, claim Amanda received second-degree facial burns when Coleman tossed a firecracker from a car that Davis, then of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was driving in a Dodger Stadium parking lot after a game on July 24. Coleman is also facing criminal charges for illegal possession of an explosive.
Actor Sean Connery, 63, revealed on British TV that he had six weeks of radiation therapy at London's Royal Marsden Hospital for an undisclosed throat condition. In 1989, the year he was named PEOPLE'S Sexiest Man Alive, Connery underwent therapy for a growth on his vocal cords.
Actor Leon Ames, 91, whose credits included more than 100 movies and several TV shows, died of a stroke on Oct. 12 at a nursing home in Laguna Beach, Calif. Among his many memorable roles, Ames, one of the co-founders of the Screen Actors Guild, played Clarence Day Sr. on the CBS television series Life With Father (1953-55), Judy Garland's father in the 1944 musical classic Meet Me in St. Louis and, from 1963 to 1965, neighbor Gordon Kirk wood on TV's Mister Ed.
