In a saga worthy of the sob sisters on the old Queen for a Day, Mel Harris plays Wilcox in this fact-based film. Suffering from leukemia, she gets pregnant during a remission. In her second trimester, she elects to indulge a new hobby and take one last cruise, delivering a sailboat from Florida to Rhode Island. She would have been better off on the S.S. Minnow.
Along with her shipmates, two cocky, hostile strangers played by John Schneider and Dana Ashbrook, she floats right into the teeth of 199l's Hurricane Bob and is capsized.
This devolves into one of those haggard lifeboat survival yarns. By-day two she's screaming at the bickering guys, "I did not survive leukemia and chemotherapy to come out on a raft in the middle of the ocean with you two and die. I want to live! I want to live!"
Meanwhile Wilcox's boyfriend (played by Harris's real-life husband Cotter Smith) is ashore, prodding the Coast Guard to search by barking such inspiration as, "Whatever it takes!"
The film is not bad of its type. But, I want to live, too! That means not wasting two hours vicariously experiencing some pointless ordeal.
