John Bradley, 70, the last survivor among the six American servicemen who raised the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima in the 1945 Pulitzer Prize-winning photo, died of a stroke on Jan. 11 at an Antigo, Wis., hospital. Bradley was the only Navy man in the group; the other five were Marines....
Morty, 6, the moose who appears at the opening of CBS's Northern Exposure, died of an illness linked to cobalt and copper mineral deficiencies on Jan. 6 in Pullman, Wash. Brought from Alaska as an orphaned yearling, Morty was the subject of a Washington State University study of moose in captivity.
After three years of dating, L.A. Law star Blair Underwood, 29, and movie production coordinator Desirée DaCosta, also 29, announced their engagement. A wedding date has not yet been set.
Actor Telly Savalas, 70, best known for his Emmy-winning title role as the lollipop-sucking police lieutenant in TV's Kojak (1973-78), is recuperating at his Universal City, Calif., home after undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. According to Savalas' rep, the actor's prognosis is good....
Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. star Jim Nabors, 63, is suffering from a potentially fatal case of hepatitis B and will need a liver transplant in the next few months to survive. Nabors, who starred in the CBS sitcom from 1964 to 1969, says that he contracted the disease while traveling in India 12 years ago.
Actor Jack Nicholson, 56, became the latest of Hollywood's elite to donate property to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, a stale agency that protects the area's natural habitat. Nicholson gave 60 acres located 10 miles northwest of downtown L.A. In 1993 Barbra Streisand donated 24 acres, and in 1986, Warren Beatty gave the agency 20 acres.
Ellie Nesler, 41, the California mother who, in April 1993, left a Jamestown, Calif., courtroom and returned, gun in hand, to kill Daniel Driver. 35, the man accused of molesting her son, was sentenced on Jan. 7 to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter and for committing a crime with a gun.
Bruce Springsteen, 44, and his wife, singer Patti Scialfa, 37, welcomed their third baby, a boy (7 lbs. 15 ozs.) who is yet to be named, on Jan. 5 in L.A. He joins siblings Evan James, 3, and Jessica Rae. 2.
