Before he could begin a Jan. 26 speech in Sydney, Australia, a startled Prince Charles (above) was pushed toward safety by a security agent after an assailant allegedly fired two blank shots from a starter's pistol and leapt onto the outdoor stage. Police arrested university student David Kang, 23, (right) who was protesting the plight of Cambodian refugees in Australia. The Prince, unharmed, calmly went ahead with his speech celebrating Australia Day. Said New South Wales premier John Fahey of the Prince: "His major concern was that an otherwise marvelous day had been spoilt by that small incident."

Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy: Impeccable British rocker Elton John posed placidly with Guns N' Roses lead grunger Axi Rose in New York City, where John was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
