Hall of Fame out-fielder Mickey Mantle, 62, has admitted himself to the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., to begin treatment for alcohol abuse. Mantle, who retired in 1968 after 18 seasons with the New York Yankees, has reportedly complained for years of frequent blackouts caused by drinking. He is scheduled for release at the end of this month....

Ex-Supreme Mary Wilson, 49, is recovering at a Loma Linda, Calif., hospital following injuries received in a highway accident on Jan. 29 in which her son, Rafael Ferrer, 14, was killed. Police say Wilson may have fallen asleep at the wheel of her Jeep Cherokee while en route from L.A. to Nevada, causing her vehicle to hit a median and overturn.

Character actor Claude Akins, 67, best remembered as Sheriff Lobo on the NBC comedy-adventure series B.J. and the Bear and its spinoff, Lobo (1979-81), died of stomach cancer at his Altadena, Calif., home on Jan. 27. Akins was most recently a radio and TV spokesman for Aamco transmissions....

Real-estate developer William Levitt, 86, whose more than 17,000 tract houses on Long Island, N.Y., set the pattern for affordable suburban housing after World War II, died of kidney failure on Jan. 28 at a Manhasset, N.Y., hospital, about 13 miles from Levittown (pop. 53,286)....

Two-time world champion downhill skier Ulrike Maier, 26, a star of the Austrian World Cup team, died Jan. 29 from a broken neck sustained in a 60 mph fall during a race in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Maier, mother of a 4-year-old daughter, was the only parent on the women's World Cup circuit. She had talked of retiring after this season and had planned to marry fiancé Hubert Schweighofer. She was considered a top medal contender in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

Actor Edward James Olmos. 46, stood and delivered his vows to actress Lorraine Bracco (Medicine Man), 39, on Jan. 28 in a private ceremony in Manhattan. It is the second marriage for both. Bracco's former husband is actor Harvey Keitel.

On Jan. 28, just two weeks after an L.A. jury declared itself hopelessly deadlocked in the murder trial of Erik Menendez, 23, a separate jury reached the same result in the trial of his brother Lyle, 26. The L.A. district attorney has vowed to retry the brothers for the August 1989 shotgun killings of their parents, Jose, 45, and Kitty, 47....

Taro, 5, the 110-pound Akita sentenced to death three years ago for biting his owners' 10-year-old niece (PEOPLE, 12/13/93), was saved from execution on Jan. 28 by New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman. Under her executive order, owners Sandra and Lonnie Lehrer must find an out-of-state home for Taro by March 1.

Former Growing Pains costar Alan Thicke, 45, and his girlfriend of two years, Gina Tolleson, 24, an ex-Miss World (1990), will marry in August. Thicke and his first wife, actress Gloria Loring, 47, have two children, Brennan, 19, and Robin, 16.
