"Kojak is the kind of guy who wouldn't arrest a hooker," Telly Savalas once told PEOPLE. "But if you give him any lip, he'll throw you through a window." That, as much as anything, summed up the blustery NYPD lieutenant Savalas portrayed for four years on Kojak, a role that won him an Emmy in 1974. And what kind of guy was Savalas, who died of cancer Jan. 22 at age 72? "He was a bighearted, generous man," says his pal and fellow TV lawman Mike (Mannix) Connors. Kojak costar Kevin Dobson concurs. "When Telly said, 'Who loves ya, baby?' " Dobson says, "he did."
