When it comes to outlandish spectacles, TV is the mother lode. I chanced across a real corker last week during an episode of Xuxa (pronounced SHOE-sha). She's Brazil's jaw-dropping gift to children's TV. Imagine Madonna crossed with Shari Lewis, speaking a stilted, heavily accented English. During the show, Xuxa introduced a special guest: it was Cheech Marin singing "My Name Is Cheech, the School Bus Driver." Cheech is best known, if at all, as half of the comedy duo Cheech and Chong. In the '70s they were the Abbott and Costello of reefer, the Martin and Lewis of marijuana, with such films as Up in Smoke. Anyway here was old Cheech (presumably now disjointed) in a floppy cowboy hat singing a silly kids' song while behind him Xuxa, decked out in black hot pants and canary-yellow Lycra leggings, led a conga line of preteens. It's morning in America!
