The grand prix racing circuit was devastated by the May 1 death of Brazilian Ayrton Senna, 34, considered the top formula-one driver in the world. Senna died in a Bologna, Italy, hospital of head injuries after his race car, going 185 mph, hit a concrete wall during the San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy. He had been the formula-one world champion in 1988, 1990 and 1991. The day before Senna's accident, in a qualifying round for the same race, 31-year-old Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger died of head injuries after his car slid off the course and hit a concrete barrier....

British actor David Langton, 82, best known to American audiences as Lord Bellamy in the immensely popular Upstairs, Downstairs series on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre, died of a heart attack at his home in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, on April 25.

Princess Stephanie, 28, and boyfriend Daniel Ducruet, 28, unveiled the newest member of the Monegasque royal family, Pauline (6 lbs. 5 ozs.), on May 4. Pauline is the second out-of-wedlock child for the rambunctious princess and her former bodyguard; in November 1992 Stephanie gave birth to a son, Louis....

Other royal news: Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, 29, daughter of Britain's Princess Margaret, has announced her engagement to artist Daniel Chatto, 35. No wedding date has been set.

Rocker John Mellencamp, 42, and his wife, model Elaine Irwin, 24, became the parents of a son, Hud (9 lbs. 4 ozs.), on April 27 in Bloomington, Ind. Mellencamp has three daughters from two previous marriages-....

Country singer Garth Brooks, 32, was not at the podium to accept Entertainer of the Year honors at the Country Music Awards in Los Angeles on May 3, because he and wife Sandy, 28, were in Nashville welcoming their second child, August Anna (9 lbs. 3 ozs.). The couple already has a daughter, Taylor, 1.

Elvis's daughter Lisa Marie Presley, 26, and her husband, musician Danny Keough, 30, announced on April 28 that they're separating. The couple have two children, Danielle, 5, and Benjamin, 1.

On May 2, a Michigan jury acquitted Dr. Jack Kevorkian, 65, of charges that he violated the state's law prohibiting assisted suicide when last year he helped end the life of a 30-year-old man suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease. It was the first trial under the two-year-old law passed specifically to stop Kevorkian's activities. In the past four years he has presided over 20 assisted suicides....

At a May 2 hearing an L.A. judge dismissed criminal charges of vandalism and assault against actor Jack Nicholson, 57, who on Feb. 8 used a golf club to smash in the windshield of a car belonging to Robert Blank, 38. Nicholson recently settled a civil suit with Blank for an undisclosed amount....

On April 26 in Conyers, Ga., actor Howard Rollins. 43, who starred until last season with Carroll O'Connor on the CBS series In the Heat of the Night, was sentenced to six months in jail after pleading guilty to charges of driving under the influence of cocaine and driving with a suspended license. Rollins has already been arrested twice before on charges of driving under the influence.
