Erasure's Andy Bell and Vince Clarke have made a nifty career crafting light, catchy microchip tunes. The British duo follows up a 1993 EP of Abba covers with another merger of synth-soul and straight-faced camp. Bell's quasi-operatic vocals continue to lend color and depth to Clarke's effete synthetic grooves, especially on "Blues Away" and "Always," the first single. But though Erasure might have seemed creative when they debuted in 1986, their tunes have begun to sound interchangeable. With its overlapping themes of love and nature, I Say has grand romantic ambitions. Too bad Erasure couldn't add a bit more bite. (Mute/Eleklra)
