The quality of the pictures that Bruce Velick, an independent art curator based in California, has gathered in Dads is also high, though the book's small size and lack of text make it more of a browser than Cook's absorbing volume. Still, the 60 well-reproduced images by such gifted photojournalists as Ruth Orkin, Mary Ellen Mark, Sebastião Salgado and Henri Cartier-Bresson let you ponder paternity in its more positive guises across the globe from the '40s to the '80s. In these pictures dads are dinner-table chieftains, human jungle gyms and instructors by example in shaving, car washing, lawn mowing and other solemn rites. (Harmony, $17)
