The BOYS AND GIRLS OF SUMMER CAME OUT SWINGING—AND JUMPING AND DANCING—IN LONG Island's fashionable Hamptons last week for a trio of charitable causes. Jodhpurs were de rigueur at the 1992 Hampton Classic horse show in the village of Bridgehampton, 80 miles east of New York City, where Joan Lunden (her shoulder in a sling from an earlier mishap with a horse), Kelly Klein (without hubby Calvin), Mike Nichols and wife Diane Sawyer, and Peter Jennings mingled to benefit Southampton Hospital and the U.S. Equestrian Team. Thirty minutes away in Montauk, T-shirts and jeans ruled at the third annual Back to the Ranch concert, where Paul Simon, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash performed for 10,000 people on behalf of various Long Island charities.
In a league of their own, a smaller but equally enthusiastic crowd turned up to cheer at the annual Artists vs. Writers Softball game in East Hampton, as Alec Baldwin, Peter Boyle, Brazilian soccer champ Pelé and other celebs went to bat for the East Hampton Day Care Center and a new shelter. Baldwin faltered at the plate, fouling off seven pitches before striking out. "I wish I'd hit better," he said afterward. Not that it mattered. The Artists—actors included—dispatched the Writers, 5-2.
