Picks and Pans Review: Carol Leifer: Gaudy, Bawdy & Blue

Showtime (Sat., Dec. 5, 10:35 P.M. ET)

Stand-up comic Leifer goes high-concept in an abbreviated, distaff version of Billy Crystal's Buddy Young character in Mr. Saturday Night. Leifer plays Rusty Berman, a notoriously risqué comic from the '60s. As she sits in a Florida retirement community being interviewed by a BBC reporter, we flash back through her career and seven marriages—all except one to punch-drunk boxers.

Leifer, her voice as smoky as Rose Marie's, is quite good as this raunchy broad. But the show runs out of ideas and jokes about 10 minutes into its half hour. Pat Corley, Julie Brown, Colin Quinn and Ken Ober costar. Paul Reiser, Phyllis Diller and Jerry Seinfeld do small bits.
