TN 1990, NASHVILLE ADMAN H. JACKSON Brown Jr. packed his son, Adam, off to college with a list of 511 numbered maxims he had composed as a kind of browseable compass for living. Later published as Life's Little Instruction Book, the collection has now sold 5 million copies in the U.S. and been translated into 10 languages. In Life's Little Instruction Book, Volume II (Rutledge Hill Press, $5.95), Brown returns with 517 more gentle suggestions. A few samples:
•514 Overpay good baby-sitters.
•622 Steer clear of any place with a Ladies Welcome sign in the window.
•730 When you carve the Thanksgiving turkey, give the first piece to the person who prepared it.
•877 Brush your teeth before putting on your tie.
•913 Hang up if someone puts you on hold to take a "call waiting."
•1015 Remember the observation of William James that the deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.
