Jonathan Paul, 27, the brother of Baywatch's Alexandra Paul, 29, has been released from Spokanc (Wash.) County Jail, where he was held for five months on contempt of court charges (PEOPLE, April 19). Jonathan had invoked the Fifth Amendment when questioned before a grand jury about a 1991 animal-rights activists' raid on a Washington State University lab. He has denied being involved in the incident. Authorities gave no official reason for freeing him.

Actress Kelly McGillis (The Babe), 35, and her husband, Florida yacht broker Fred Tillman, 44, welcomed their second child, daughter Sonora Ashley (7 lbs.) on April 11 in Key West, Fla. Sonora's big sister. Kelsey, turns 3 next month....

David Letterman's bemused bandleader Paul Shaffer, 43, and his wife, Cathy, a TV talent coordinator, had their first child, daughter Victoria Lily (7 lbs. 5 oz.), on April 8 in New York City.

Writer Wallace Stegner, 84, whose work examined the frontier psyche of the American West, died April 13 in Santa Fe of injuries from a March 28 traffic accident there. A novelist, short-story writer, essayist, historian and biographer. Stegner won 1972's Pulitzer Prize for his novel Angle of Repose and 1977's National Book Award for The Spectator Bird. Also an environmentalist and teacher, Stegner founded an influential creative-writing program at Stanford University.

Actress Diane Lane (MY New Gun), 28, and her husband, actor Christopher Lambert (Highlander II: The Quickening), 35, are expecting their first child in August.
